It's nice to meet up, share the load, help others, and know that you can change how you are in the world
If you have answered 'yes' to one or more of these questions you might be interested in joining our small therapy group with a special focus on weight loss.
Our weight loss therapy group is small and friendly, with a maximum of eight people. You are assured of a warm welcome.
Here are five good reasons for joining our group:
Hope
Many of us are pessimistic about the possibilty of change, but a group contains people at different stages, and the people that have made changes provide hope to those of us just starting out.
You are Not Alone
We can often feel that our problems are different from everyone else's, but you don't have to be in group therapy for long before you realise many others have the same concerns.
The Feel-Good Factor
It's nice to meet up, share the load, help others, and know that you can change how you are in the world.
Family Values
It's funny how the group can feel almost like a nurturing, helpful family.
If your family was like mine and somewhat less than perfect, the power of the group 'family' can help you undo some of the damage done when you were growing up.
Ripples in a Pond
Often in group therapy, one person makes a change and that change ripples out - other people make the same change.
Miracle Diets Don't Work
Dieting:
More and more studies are showing that diets make you fat - sure you can get the weight off, but more than eight out of ten people end up putting more weight back on than they took off! At their worst, diets can actually be dangerous, for example, a lack of vitamins and nutrients can lead to hair loss and dry skin.
Slimming pills:
There is no real evidence that slimming pills can make you thinner. How they work is to make you feel a bit less hungry. Over the counter slimming pills can actually do harm, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
Laxatives:
Laxatives might help you feel less guilty and bloated. Unfortunately, they don't reduce weight and can upset your body chemistry. Dehydration from using laxatives can lead to shaking, feeling weak, blurry vision, fainting spells, and in the long term kidney damage
Why Do I Eat Too Much When I am Already Unhappy With My Weight?
We eat too much because food comforts us or it distracts us from bad feelings - we can even eat in temper! We can go on a diet and lose weight but sooner or later we put it back on again because there is something deep within us driving us to eat.
Our therapy weight loss group does not involve dieting or weigh-ins. The focus is getting to the bottom of the bad feeling that push us to eat.
Psychodrama
One of the methods we will use in the group is psychodrama. I'm sure you are familiar with feeling upset about putting on weight and feeling the pressure to eat - perhaps not at the same time, but certainly in fairly quick succession.
Psychodrama will be used to “act out” each role in succession as a way of finding the positive intent of both behaviours.
