David offers affirmative psychotherapy - he does not judge his clients, he appreciates that each person is unique, and he appreciates that each person is faced with a unique set of challenges
David blends a range of techniques and modalities of psychotherapy to produce his unique flavour of counselling and psychotherapy within a Transactional Analysis theoretical framework.
This means that he can offer the type of therapy, or combination of therapies, that is most appropriate for the particular needs of each person.
David offers counselling and psychotherapy to individuals, couples and small groups regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender preference, religion, politics, culture.
"Transactional Analysis is a theory of personality and a systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and personal change" - ITAA
Transactional Analysis
David works within a Transactional Analysis (TA) theoretical framework. TA is a powerful therapeutic approach which is widely used by psychotherapists and counsellors.
TA is a theory of personality and interpersonal communications used to facilitate change and growth. It can be used for working with individuals, couples, and groups.
It is a broad-based "talking therapy" and, though its roots lie in Freudian Psychoanalysis, it draws upon several models including Gestalt, Person-Centred Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Existential Therapy.
TA is not a therapy which is 'done to' the client, but is 'done with'.
- Everyone is OK
- We can all think
- We all have the ability to decide what is right for us.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is an interpersonal communication model and an alternative approach to psychotherapy based on the subjective study of language, communication and personal change.
It was co-created by Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder in the 1970s. The initial focus was pragmatic, modeling three successful psychotherapists, Fritz Perls (Gestalt Therapy), Virginia Satir (Family Systems Therapy), and eventually Milton H. Erickson (Clinical Hypnosis), with the aim of discovering what made these individuals more successful than their peers.
Transactional Analysis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming work well together because TA has a very rich theoretical structure into which NLP techniques can slot.
This means that David can offer the type of therapy, or combination of therapies, that is most appropriate for the particular needs of each person.
What You Can Expect From David
He offers an intial mutual assessment session where we can discuss your issues and needs and work out whether therapy would be suitable for you. You will get a sense of how David works during this meeting, and also get a sense of whether he would be the sort of person you would want to work with.
In the sessions you will be free to talk about your problems and your situation and you will be listened to carefully.
We will regularly review our work together, assess progress and look at how we are relating to each other and experiencing our relationship.
A session normally lasts for one hour, although couples therapy sessions are an hour and a half long, and the initial stop smoking session is 2½ hours long.
One of the most common questions David is asked is, "How long does therapy take?"
The overall length of time you choose to be in therapy depends very much upon what you want to achieve, and the nature, severity and extent of the issues we are addressing. It is also determined by how long you want to take. Some people achieve the results they want in just a few weeks, others may take months or even years. David works at a pace that suits you. He discusses the expected length of therapy during the early exploratary sessions with you and together we would quickly develop a strong sense as to whether we feel a short term or longer term approach is best.
